GAME INFO AND FAQ

- What kind of game is Witchy Willows?
Witchy Willows is intended to be a casual, slice of life urban fantasy game with mostly player-run plots. There is absolutely the potential for more serious, darker storylines, but it is first and foremost an easy game for players to enjoy without a lot of pressure. If players would like to cause problems on purpose, go for it! If it's going to be a larger plot, please let us know.
- How will characters be expected to play in game?
Players will be expected to utilize
witchywillows for character network posts, and
willow_log for logs. Action spam can absolutely happen in network posts, but that isn’t what the intended starting post is to be.
There will be routine mod posts to the OOC community for any odd status effects of the city. Players are welcome to play along with the post, or ignore as you like. - What is activity like?
As the game is intended to be relaxed and stress-free, there will only be periodic check ins throughout the year. When these check-ins happen, just let us know if you are still around and what characters you are keeping. You can drop a character at any time, but please don't sit on a character you don't intend to play.
- What is the IC vs OOC day ratio?
The game runs on a 1:1 day ratio. That means that one day OOC equals to one day in-game. Players are welcome to backdate posts and threads and play them out as needed!
- How are applications run?
Applications are accepted at any time through the submission form. Character journals will be accepted to the communities as the mod's time allows but generally will be same day.
- Can I reserve a character?
There are no reserves! Just submit what character you would like to play. If you are intending to app an AU version of a character already in game, we do ask that you contact that player first and work things out.
- What characters are allowed in Witchy Willows?
- Canon characters: Canon characters are allowed provided they have enough substantial canon or a strong enough personality to support them with little canon. In short: as long as the player isn’t using a majority of headcanon to make the character playable, they should be fine. For new or frequently updated canons, we do request that players wait at least one month before apping from a new canon or updating to a new canon point. This is for consideration of other players who may not have the time or resources available to see the new information as it comes out.
- CRAUs: We do allow for CRAUs, which is characters brought in from another DWRP game with their game history. We do just ask that in your character journal to provide a brief history of their time in the previous game and how it may have changed their personality in any way.
- AU Versions: We do allow for alternate universe versions of canon characters in game! All we ask is a brief summary of the AU in the character's journal, and that you please contact any canon version of the character already in game before submitting.
- OCs: We definitely want to allow players to play original characters in Witchy Willows! Please just let us know on your application that it's an OC. We may in the future look into allowing players to play Setting OCs or Setting AU versions of canon characters as well.
- Are MMO and Malleable protagonists appable?: They absolutely are! With malleable protagonists, we ask that in your history section to just outline some of the choices made in your game so we have an idea of the story they took. MMO characters can actually be apped as OCs; we do stipulate that we would like to consider their interactions with any canon characters of the MMO as minimal/light (as in talked to for quests, not good friends), or not at all (only heard tale of them or seen them from a distance).
For multiple choices/endings, please briefly describe somewhere in the character journal, as a list or bullet point the major decisions and chosen ending. - What characters are not allowed in Witchy Willows?
Currently, we will not be accepting fanon ocs, historical figures, representations of real world things (the sun, countries, etc). If you are unsure about a character you're considering applying for, please don't hesitate to ask.
- What is the minimum canon required for a character to be appable?
Currently, we do ask that characters have enough canon available to have not only a distinct personality, but enough material that you don't have to use at least 60% headcanon to play them. Exceptions may apply depending upon the pace of canon, release schedules, and/or the circumstances of the character in question. If you are unclear about a character or canon, please feel free to contact us.
- Can I app a character if they're dead in canon?
Definitely. they can be brought in just before their death. Or if they're brought in after, they may not remember they died. Magic's weird sometimes. As long as they follow the requirements above for appable characters, they should be fine!
- Can my characters bring items with them?
Characters are brought in with whatever items they have on their person at that moment. Magic items still have their power, powerful items may be requested to be nerfed a bit. A note that characters who canonically have 4th dimentional storage (bags of holding, etc) may be subjected to only have a limited number of their inventory. Please ask us if you have any questions!
- How many characters can i play?
At this time, there is no character cap. Just please only bring characters you intend to play regularly.
- What if my character had powers in canon?
Characters with canon powers are absolutely welcome here! They'll be able to keep their powers, though world-destroying ones may be asked to be nerfed down a bit. They'll still be able to use magic in this world as it's described if you want them to, or you can have their powers be their magic. It's up to you!
- What happens when my character enters the game?
When characters enter the game, they're brought in through a stand alone portal. Think tears in space time magic and not sci-fi. Whoever brought them in likely did it by accident messing with magic they couldn't control. They'll apologetically direct your character to one of the city community shelters built specifically for folks in your character's situation: displaced from their world.
At the shelter, characters will be provided a nice bed, a bathroom to shower or bathe, and information about what's happened and the world they're in. The shelters are nice and professional, almost like a hotel. They don't expect your character to stay indefinitely. There are counselors trained just for this occasion and ready to give as much or as little information needed for your characters. There will also be a phone provided and ways to connect to people looking to hire displaced characters so they can get on their feet while they're in town. The community takes in a small tax so they can provide new arrivals with a starting stipend.
A note: Characters are not required to go to the shelters upon arrival if they wouldn't ICly do so! This is just what the city has in place for arrivals. If they choose not to go to the shelter, they won't have access to post to the game's network until they are able to buy a network-accessible device or subsequently visit the shelter to get one later. - You mentioned shelters? What about housing?
As stated above, there are a few small and large shelters for characters to use once they enter the game, and to get settled in. Characters are free to stay, but the workers will try to help people obtain housing. One shelter is the aforementioned single room hotel-esque shelter. Another shelter in Oldtown is a large victorian styled house with larger rooms meant to house 4 characters per room.
Characters with jobs can rent houses or small apartments, or combine with characters to obtain such housing. However, with no credit, owning or renting large and lavish housing would take some in-game time to procure. We ask that you consider the amount of time it would take in the real world. Homeownership should be a very long-term goal with a reasonable timeframe and expectations. - Can my character bring a pet/pokemon/etc with them?
This is a sort of two fold answer! For one, if the pet/pokemon/etc is purely a pet and not something with enough personality/autonomy to be applied separately, then that would be a yes! But secondly, the portals work strangely, so the pet would have to be physically attached to the character in question - so either on their body, or the character holding them. If they were following behind the character, then it's unlikely they would be brought through. There are a lot of pets available in Witchy Willows if they desire a companion.
- My character isn't human, can they still be played?
As long as your character can consciously make decisions and choices, then they can definitely be played here. Non-human characters don't have to be human-fied but be warned they may be looked at strangely or warily by the locals. They won't cause a disruption or deny you anything, but there will be looks.
- Is there a language barrier?
There is nothing innately in place to translate for characters, so they'll be speaking their native tongue. However, if they go to either of the shelters, they can use a spell or potion there to help facilitate the language barrier. It doesn't erase or make them stop talking in their native language, it just makes them able to understand what others are saying. In short: if a character hasn't gone to the shelter or found someone to give them this ability, they run the risk of not being able to understand what's being said to them!
- What happens if my character dies?
If a character dies in Witchy Willows, a few different options are available. They can simply stay dead if you wish to drop the character. Other characters could bring necessary spell ingredients or someone powerful enough to revive them. Maybe your character found some way to revive themselves. There are any number of ways to deal with death in game and it would be handled case by case. If you have a character you wish to die in game, please speak with a mod first as there are very few NPCs in the game powerful enough and with the knowledge to revive them.
- How do canon updates work?
Magic is still a tricky thing here! A lot of things people are still learning as it becomes more popular. A character may have a bad reaction to a spell or potion they're practicing and come out with more information than they had before. They may have somehow opened a portal back up and gone through to come back again. Sometimes characters disappear for a while and come back with new memories. Things happen and it's more or less up to the player to find a way to make that happen within the parameters of the world.
- How do characters handle 4th walling? Are they able to reference genres or steer clear of it at all?
We ask that you please just 4th wall and pop culture reference responsibly. If you're unsure about 4th walling something, feel free to ask the player if it may directly involve them.
- Mods are in PST. We try to answer or acknowledge all questions by evening our time, but delays may happen!
